One hairy pasta coming up

The title of this post pretty much says it all...
But I'm still going to ease into it story style ('cause that's just how I roll - and yes, I did just say that).

And so it goes...
We went to Panarottis (at the Liberty Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg) for lunch today. I ordered the "mixed oven bake" which is said to be "a combination of creamy ricotta and spinach cannelloni, chicken and beef lasagne in a creamy tomato-based sauce, topped with mozzarella and cheddar." But hey, the menu doesn't tell you EVERYTHING...

I got my meal (eventually, the service was extremely slow and not the best AND the restaurant was not even busy! But that's another story) and I was quite happy with it. It looked good and I was hungry.

This is basically what the meal looked like. As you can see there are 3 little portions. The first has beef mince, the second spinach and the third chicken.

I started off with the beef portion and finished it. Then decided to have the chicken portion. So I took a bite and as I'm placing my fork and knife to get my second bite I notice a little strand in the cheese. I look closer to make sure that I'm seeing right and that it is in fact hair, and also to make sure that it's not MY hair *left hand over face*. And it turns out that the strand of hair is BAKED INTO THE CHEESE!

It was so gross! I felt so sick thinking about how I had eaten from it and who know's whose hair it was and whether they washed or had lice and if there's hair in there WHAT ELSE COULD BE IN THERE...?!

After recovering from the horror I called the waiter and showed it to him. He didn't say a thing, just got the manager. The manager came and is like "how can I help you?" I showed him the pasta, making sure to emphasize that the hair was BAKED INTO the cheese. He was all like "O I didn't realize it was baked into it. Let me take this to the kitchen." I guess he didn't want to take it out right there in front of other customers... He returned to apologize and told me that apparently the food was not made by them in their kitchens, it was made elsewhere and packaged and just sent to them... Not really sure how true that is, especially seen as it took pretty long to get my meal, but hey, I don't know...

He offered me another meal or to strike the hairy meal off my bill. Seriously now, am I really gonna want ANOTHER meal from the place that just served me food with hair in it...?! So it was struck off my bill.

I'm glad for that. They were nice and sorted out the problem and what not, but its still gross that I ate a meal with someone's filthy hair in it. Yes, accidents do happen and we really don't know WHAT goes on behind the scenes of restaurants, but it would be nice if people took some care... At the very least the cook (or whoever) put the food in the oven could have at least checked to see that all was in order... You're being paid for your service and product, a certain standard should be met... I don't think that's a lot to ask for...

When I chose to have the item struck off the bill the manager apologized again and when he said, "the next time you come here..." I thought he was going to say "your meal will be free", but instead he promised to make our meals himself... Sad.
